Altered Candle

Making candles is one of my favorite things to do at Christmas time. They make awesome and inexpensive gifts!

I stamped the images on (gift) tissue paper and colored them in. Then I placed the tissue paper on the candle and used kitchen wax paper to wrap around the candle. I heated it with a heat gun and it was done! Easy peasy!

Ok, so I'm a few days late this week. I wasn't feeling well at the beginning of the week, so this card didn't happen until now. Our challenge is primary colors.

Emboss Resist Technique

This is the first tutorial I've ever posted, and I am excited to share it with you. One of my favorite techniques is emboss resist.

Supplies:
Versamark Ink Pad
Stamp (I used "Let it Snow")
Clear embossing powder
Heat gun
Any color ink pad
Sponge daubers, sponges, or eyeshadow applicators

I started out by stamping my image in versamark. You won't be able to see it, since it is clear. Put the embossing powder over top. Heat with heat gun until it becomes shiny.

Get out your ink pads and begin sponging a color over top of your image. Start with the lightest colors first. You can always apply more.

Keep applying ink until you get the desired result. Ink does not go over top of the embossing, so you will be able to see your image through the ink.

I did the same thing with the sentiment.

Life Update

I've been slacking in my posts this week! Sorry about that! The school year has started back up and my job is in full swing. It's always hard getting back into the swing of things after having the summer off!

This past week, we renovated my kitchen too. We used to have pale pink tiles (with fruit on them), pink walls, and pink countertops. Our cabinets and appliances were in great shape, so we only changed out the countertops and backsplash.

Lasting Memories 53

Hopefully this will post, as I am in Hurricane Irene's path and I expect to be without power for at least a day or two.

My DT term is up and this is my last challenge at Lasting Memories. I am really sad to go, but hopefully I will play along as much as possible in the coming months. I've had so much fun the past 8 months! A special thanks to Karen, our amazing DT leader!

This week at Lasting Memories, our challenge is "who/what inspires you." This was easy for me. My husband is such an inspiration to me because of his military service. He's spent several years overseas in Germany and Afghanistan. He is not longer on active duty, but he is still a member of the National Guard. Yesterday, he was deployed to assist in PA's hurricane relief.

This layout is of my husband's return from Germany at the end of his 4 years of active duty. I was so happy to have him home. We moved in together and were married a few months later. All of these photos were taken at the airport. I wore a shirt, given to me by a friend, that said "I {heart} my soldier."

A Squirrel on Christmas Eve

On Christmas Eve 2007, we had a furry visitor. We were living in an apartment building on the third floor. There were some trees near our window, but not too close. I'm not sure how, but a squirrel ended up on our window ledge. Then it was climbing our screen. So of course I grabbed my camera!

I was going through some paper scraps and I found this animal border. Then I took a piece of green paper, used my stripe stamp to give it some texture. I added the square brads and the oval punches.

A Fundraiser

Kim Sherrod, former DT Coordinator for Tuesday Throwdown is hosting a fundraiser for her friend. This is a fundraiser to help Kim's friend out at this time to help her with expenses so she can see her son. He has a heart problem and it's costly for the trip and it's financially difficult for her to travel. Help us to make it possible for her to spend some time with him. She doesn't think he's going to make it and anything will help to ease her burden during this difficult time.

Stampin' Up Tender Toile

I'm very into traditional decor. I love antiques and waverly fabrics. I've always been a huge fan of toile. In my office/scrap room, I have toile curtains and pillows. When I saw this retired Stampin' Up set, Tender Toile on ebay, I had to have it!

This card was so quick and easy to make! I stamped the rabbit repeatedly and then put the ribbon across, and added the punched our sentiment. Easy peasy 5 minute card!

Happy Tuesday! This week at Tuesday Throwdown, our challenge is a "matching set."

I don't have a project to share today because I am having issues with my printer. My color print heads aren't working right and anything I print (in color) has lines and stripes through it. I consulted the sponsor and she would rather have me sit the challenge out than use an image from another company.

Also, we are hosting a DT call at Tuesday Throwdown!

Lasting Memories 47

This week at Lasting Memories, our challenge is distressing. I saw a layout kit on embellishonline.com a few months back and I bought the background papers so that I could make a similar one. So I guess you could call this a "counterfeit kit" and CASE of the layout I saw.

I used photos from Longport, NJ where my family has a house. They are photos of the 2 gazebos in town and "Lucy the Margate Elephant," a HUGE landmark in the area. You can actually take a tour and walk through the inside of the elephant!

I turned the photos black and white and gave them a white border to make them appear older. It also makes them stand out against the busy background.

I distressed the edges of the red photo mats with a paper edge shredder. I inked the edges of the scalloped circle and the old images from the background papers.

I needed a birthday card for my Uncle. He has always had box turtles, so this turtle image was perfect for him. I love the look of embossing several different pieces of paper together, so I used my Stampin' Up Square Lattice Embossing Folder for this. This week at Lasting Memories, our challenge is to create a mosaic layout. This is one of my favorite scrapbooking techniques. It works best with floral photos, animals, or scenery. My cousin graduated from high school this year, and he is leaving for the Army on July 5th. So my aunt and uncle planned a graduation/going away party for him tomorrow. This is the card I made for him.

I have a slight obsession with birds, especially peacocks. I actually just got a peacock teapot and plates from Macy's. They are so pretty that I have to share a picture:

I was on ebay and I happened to see a GORGEOUS retired Stampin' Up set called "Pretty Peacocks." I just had to have it! When I had my Stampin Up party a few weeks ago, I bought the "Nature's Nest" set and I used the peacock feather from it to create this background.

I remembered some card fronts that I had cut out and saved from cards I received at my wedding. One looked very similar to my mother's dress. The card came with a pink background. A Crossword Father's Day Card

I always want to do something extra special for my dad on father's day. He's such a unique person. He's a police officer. He loves cars, and can tell you the year, make, and model of anything that drives past. He loves animals of ALL kinds. Growing up, we had SO many pets! Cats, rabbits, hampsters, a ferret, hedgehogs, turtles, snakes, alligators, lizards, you name it. He also LOVES crossword puzzles.

Since I usually give him cards with reptiles on them, I decided to make him a crossword card this year. I googled crossword puzzles and counted out the squares until I found one where I could fit "Happy Father's Day" in it.
